Fermi’s Paradox and Free Will
Because Fermi had a point, below, some Saturday night pondering:
Premise 1: Free will cannot exist in a physical universe that’s determined by cause and effect and randomness.
Premise 2: Intelligent, conscious, self aware beings eventually discover the truth of premise 1. Acceptance of premise 1 by the intelligent beings produces fatalistic behavior.
Premise 3: Within the intelligent civilization, the mass spread of fatalism halts significant technological progress, among other things, thereby preventing the development of the capability to contact other intelligent lifeforms in the universe.
Conclusion: Intelligent alien civilizations do exist, but never develop the capability to contact other civilizations (i.e., us) due to a trend towards fatalism as the result of the acceptance of determinism.
Crazy, perhaps, but fun to think about.
